Jimmy White earned a reputation as an underdog. A player with a flamboyant style and a ruthless streak, he fought for his place in the sport with an unflinching determination to succeed. One of his best moments was during his world semi-final in 1999.

He didn't lose a single frame in his two first qualifying matches. But when it came to his next two tournaments, he fell short of a victory, losing in deciding frames to Xiao Guodong and Matthew Selt. Despite the setbacks, he continued to enjoy some good performances throughout the year.

In the 2014/15 season, he won three matches at full-ranking events. He lost to Barry Hawkins at the International Championship, which ended his disappointing season. Despite this, his final ranking was in the top eight, not the top 64.

Jimmy White was named the youngest winner of the ranking event the next season. During the course of the tournament, he defeated Stephen Hendry, Mark Selby and David Morris. With his win, he was able to secure his place in the professional top 64.
